This new study of the genesis of the Indonesian national state is based on the notion that the birth of that nation grew out of not only the liberation movement but also from the Dutch rule that the nationalists agitated against. The book places a clear emphasis on the ways in which Dutch rule was established in the Indonesian archipelago in the course of three centuries and examines the developments of Dutch colonial policies. This feeds into chapters that focus on the Indonesian nationalist movement and the Japanese occupation of the colony in 1942-1945. The occupation helped to enable the proclamation of Indonesian indepence and the creation of the Republic in August 1945. The conflict that erupted between the Repub-lic and the Netherlands was brought to an incomplete solution in 1949, but the dis-pute about West-Irian led to a sequel that lasted for another thirteen years. More than half of this book is dedicated to the conflict and its aftermath. Much attention is paid to the sentiments and ideas that informed Dutch policy. Various issues that have received scant attention in the historiography are now dis-cussed. The author based his study on Dutch and international literature, contemporary newspapers and policy documents, and his own memories. In the books title, the stork represents the Dutch and the garuda functions as a symbol of Indonesia. J. Herman Burgers (1926) worked at the Dutch Department of Foreign Affairs. He studied Law in Amsterdam and Political Science at Stanford University. He was deeply interested in the conflict between the Netherlands and the Republic of Indone-sia, as it broke out in 1945. This fascination has never left him, and he has continued to study the conflict and its aftermath, especially during the years 1948-1950 when he was in Indonesia for his Dutch military service.

Nationale geschiedenis is volop in discussie, niet alleen in Nederland. Terwijl een canon ankerplaatsen en vensters probeert te bieden, brengt de multiculturele samenleving aanspraken op erkenning en inclusie met zich mee en eisen conservatieven behoud van het traditionele geschiedverhaal. Moet nationale geschiedenis verbinden, een thuis bieden, confronteren, aanklagen of verzoenen? In haar maatschappelijke functie is geschiedenis vooral een 'willenschap'. Dat is altijd zo geweest. Van en voor wie is de geschiedenis eigenlijk? Remieg Aerts maakt zichtbaar hoe historici door de tijd heen de Nederlandse geschiedenis hebben vormgegeven. Welke keuzen structureren dat verhaal? In lange lijnen over vier eeuwen volgt hij het fenomeen van de natiestaat en laat hij zien hoe voorstellingen van identiteit, nationaliteit, tolerantie, burgerlijkheid, democratie en politiek hun schijnbare vanzelfsprekendheid hebben gekregen. Waarom heeft Nederland geen republikeinse traditie? Wat is er nationaal aan nationale geschiedenis? Door vragen te stellen, neemt Aerts de lezer mee in deze overdenkingen en trekt hij de lijnen door naar de actualiteit, bijvoorbeeld rond emotie in de politiek. Zo blijkt telkens de relevantie van het historisch perspectief voor het heden, want cultuur en samenleving bestaan voor een groot deel uit geschiedenis.

Daarbij wordt de opkomst van de natiestaat herbekeken in een brede politieke en intellectuele context, en worden de ideologische drijfveren achter het introduceren van het nationalisme in het politiek discours blootgelegd. Het centrale betoog luidt dat het duurzaam succes van het 19de-eeuwse natiestaatmodel, en van de politiek van het nationalisme, alleen begrepen kan worden als keerzijde van de teloorgang van het (neo)klassieke republicanisme – een denkstroming over vrijheid, soevereiniteit en burgerschap die haar oorsprong in de renaissance vond en aan de basis lag van de revolutionaire gebeurtenissen op het einde van de 18de eeuw. Het essay geeft zo een aanzet tot de herontdekking van dit gedachtegoed, en onderkent hierin de belofte van een hernieuwd politiek engagement voor transnationalisme en universalisme. Stefaan Marteel (1977) studeerde geschiedenis aan de Universiteit Gent en behaalde in 2009 zijn doctoraat aan het Europees Universitair Instituut in Firenze. Hij gaf les aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen en is de auteur van The Intellectual Origins of the Belgian Revolution: Political Thought and Disunity in the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Palgrave 2018).
